Baccarat has a reputation for being complicated and it is the opposite. You bet on Player, Banker or Tie, two hands are dealt, and whichever is closer to nine wins. You make no decisions at all — the drawing rules are fixed and the dealer applies them. What matters is knowing which of the three bets to avoid.
How a hand plays
Two cards go to Player and two to Banker. Tens and picture cards count zero, aces count one, and only the last digit of the total counts — so a 7 and an 8 make 15, which is a five.
Whether a third card is drawn is decided entirely by fixed rules based on the totals. Nobody chooses. That is why baccarat plays fast and why there is no strategy to learn beyond the bet selection itself.
Banker is the cheapest bet, even with commission
Banker wins slightly more often than Player, because of the way the drawing rules work. To compensate, a commission is usually taken on winning Banker bets.
Even after that commission, Banker remains the cheapest bet on the table — marginally better than Player and dramatically better than Tie. The commission feels like a penalty, which is why players avoid it, but the underlying edge more than covers it.
The Tie is the bet to avoid. It pays a large multiple because it lands rarely, and it carries a far higher house edge than either main bet. It is where the table's margin concentrates and where most baccarat losses come from.
Side bets and variants
Live tables offer side bets — perfect pairs, player and banker pairs, and others. As everywhere in live casino, they pay attractively and cost more than the base game.
